L’Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées (OMP) dispose de deux sites dans les Hautes-Pyrénées dévolus à l’expérimentation et à l’observation de l’atmosphère : le Centre de Recherche Atmosphériques (CRA), situé près de Lannemezan à 588 m d'altitude, et, distant de 28 kilomètres, le Pic-du-Midi (PDM) à 2877 m d'altitude. Grâce aux personnels scientifiques et techniques, aux infrastructures et aux capacités d'accueil de ces deux sites, des observations en météorologie, chimie et électricité atmosphériques y sont conduites depuis plusieurs décennies.

La double plate-forme P2OA a trois missions principales :

  • L'observation continue de grandeurs atmosphériques
  • L'accueil de campagnes expérimentales
  • La formation sur le terrain

Outre les observations et expérimentations menées indépendamment sur chaque site du fait de leurs potentialités propres, la configuration géographique des sites permet, par l’exploitation de mesures coordonnées, l’étude spécifique des échanges de masses d’air et de constituants atmosphériques entre la plaine et la montagne, ou entre la couche limite et la troposphère libre.

Le figures ci-dessous répertorient chronologiquement les moyens d'observation continue déployés sur les deux sites durant les dernières années, et indiquent (au-dessus de la flèche du temps) les réseaux et programmes nationaux et internationaux d'observation dans lesquels ces moyens s'intègrent.
